Mature Student/Equivalency Testing for Math, English and Science

Students who apply to Sheridan’s certificate and diploma programs who do not have the required secondary school credentials for admission into the program must demonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level by completing an equivalency test. These tests may also be requested for those applying as a Mature Student who do not meet the admission requirements for their specific programs.
Mature Student English Test (MSET)
The Mature Student English Test (MSET) is administered through the Accuplacer platform and consists of three sections.

ACCUPLACER – Next Generation Reading |
Next-Generation Reading assesses the test-taker’s ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts. Passages on the test cover a range of content areas, writing modes, and complexities. Both single and paired passages are included. Four broad knowledge and skills categories are assessed:

ACCUPLACER – Next Generation Writing |
Next-Generation Writing evaluates a test-taker’s ability to revise and edit multi-paragraph text. Questions cover two broad knowledge and skills categories, each containing three subcategories: Expression of Ideas

Admission Math and CAAT Level D Tests
Students who apply to Sheridan’s certificate and diploma programs who do not have the required secondary school credentials for admission into the program must demonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level by completing an equivalency test. Level D of the CAAT is designed for adults who have had the equivalent of eleven to twelve years of schooling and possibly some postsecondary education. Level D is also for students entering college or university. At Sheridan, assessment is available in the areas of math and science.
