In early April, Sheridan’s world-renowned Theatre Sheridan program celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Dozens of students, faculty, audience members, donors and alumni gathered at Sheridan's Marquee space at its Trafalgar Road Campus to mark the occasion with a gala event. Attendees could explore displays of Theatre Sheridan work from the past 50 years, sample food and drink, hear from leaders in programs and enjoy live performances from students in the Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program.
“Theatre Sheridan is such an important part of the community here at Sheridan, but also an important part of the community in our surrounding areas,” said Mark Jones, Dean of the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. “For over 50 years, we’ve seen time and time again how the students, staff and faculty of this incredible ecosystem continue to produce some of the finest talents [...] of any theatre company in the country.”
The event was capped with those in attendance seeing the closing show of Theatre Sheridan's musical Mary Poppins, having ended its sold-out run.
A full house of donors, alumni, students and staff came together in The Marquee at Sheridan’s Trafalgar Road Campus to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The Marquee was decorated with memorabilia to commemorate the past 50 years of productions, including displays of costumes, props and set pieces.
A selection of props from Theatre Sheridan productions of the last 50 years was put on display, alongside placards noting the musical where the prop was used, alongside the production year.
Janet Morrison, President and Vice-Chancellor at Sheridan College, spoke to attendees about the fundamental role art and performance play in the mental health and wellbeing of communities. “Your continued support of Theatre Sheridan is in fact also in support of those communities, and the mental health and wellbeing of their community members,” she said.
Fourth-year students from the Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance performed a song from Bad Hats Theatre’s Alice In Wonderland – another production from the season.
Attendees of the gala had the opportunity to see the closing show of Theatre Sheridan’s musical, Mary Poppins.
