Creating Opportunity

Hard work and opportunity often go hand-in-hand, as Manufacturing Management grad Jatin Patel, 2011, has discovered. Coming to Sheridan to supplement his University of Ontario Institute of Technology engineering degree, Jatin focused on gaining the skills that allowed him to begin building his career.

“Applying myself and the techniques developed during my time at Sheridan was highly recognized by upper management,” he says of time spent in an internship with Rockwell Automation after his final semester. Jatin’s work at the company during his Sheridan co-op placement earned him a contract position with Rockwell where he was able to expand his practical knowledge of project management.

He has since moved on to become a Process Planning Engineer with MAHLE Behr, an automotive parts manufacturer in Michigan, Jatin oversees the design, building and installation of equipment that produces HVAC systems for commercial and passenger vehicles. Developing and leading the integration of new manufacturing processes is also part of his job. As MAHLE has production facilities throughout the world, travel is a big component of Jatin’s job. “I have the opportunity to visit different locations and learn about different cultures while I work,” he explains.

Relocating to the United States certainly posed a challenge, says Jatin, but he believes that approaching difficult decisions openly and rationally is crucial to success. “Step out of your comfort zone and apply the fundamentals taught through your education.”
