Sheridan expands innovation and commercialization capacity with over $290,000 investment from Intellectual Property Ontario

An investment of over $290,000 from Intellectual Property Ontario will help Sheridan build on its critical capacity to provide supports and guidance on intellectual property (IP) and commercialization to industry partners.

The funding will enable Sheridan to better maximize commercial outcomes of innovations developed through collaborative research. 

IPON’s investment will build on Sheridan’s ability to address industry challenges by leveraging cutting-edge technology, connecting partners of all sizes to institutional expertise and resources, including our exceptional faculty and students and delivering innovative real-world solutions with immediate positive business impact through applied research. This includes advising on IP opportunities and providing financial supports associated with commercialization and IP protection, with a goal of helping Sheridan’s industry partners confidently take steps to bring their products and services to market.  

“IPON’s investment will strengthen Sheridan’s role as a trusted collaborator with industry partners,” said Andrea England, Vice Provost, Research, Generator at Sheridan. “With this funding, our partners will be able to access dedicated IP and commercialization resources at Sheridan to support their journey in bringing their offerings to market.” 

Sheridan is one of 10 postsecondary institutions benefiting from IPON’s new investment of $2.9 million to support innovation and commercialization projects at postsecondary institutions across the province. This funding is part of the Government of Ontario’s Commercialization Mandate Policy Framework to help colleges and universities advance the shared goal of ensuring that “made-in-Ontario” research and innovation benefit Ontarians. 

Training and networking opportunities will also be available to support Sheridan researchers, staff, students and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This includes promoting awareness of IP principles and practices as well as providing access to tools and resources through IPON. These opportunities will help eliminate barriers for researchers and SMEs and support their successful navigation of the complex IP and commercialization system.
