Gain skills and experience to become a certified athletic therapist

Sheridan’s Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy)  (BAHSc,  AT) Program was specifically designed to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and experience to become an athletic therapist certified by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. The Athletic Therapy program equips you with:

  • Advanced skills in athletic therapy including field assessment and injury treatment, and clinical assessment and rehabilitation for all types of injuries
  • Entrepreneurial business skills to help you establish a practice
  • Research skills to ensure you always stay current in the field
  • 1,200 hours of embedded athletic therapy course experience while in school

The program integrates practical, hands-on field and clinical experience through combined lecture and lab experinces. Sheridan’s facilities include a new,  state-of-the-art Athletic Therapy Clinic  with  aquatic rehab, dedicated lab space with brand new equipment as well as new training facilities.  All educators are Certified Athletic Therapists with advanced degrees in the areas of rehabilitation sciences, biomechanics and physiology as well as extensive experience working in the field.*

Field Placement

Each semester of the last three years of your Athletic Therapy program includes field and/ or clinical work. During Year 2  you'll undertake a field practicum in a high school sports team or community hockey team environment.  Year 3 is spent predominantly with Varsity teams in colleges and universities.  In Year 4 you'll have more clinical responsibility working both in the Sheridan Athletic Therapy Centre as well as community clinics.  Between Years 3 and 4, you'll have an opportunity to participate in a 14-week internship gaining hands-on experience in athletic therapy.

Graduates of this program will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Assess and treat injuries as part of health care team both on location in sports settings and in athletic therapy clinics.
  • Plan, implement and supervise a comprehensive athletic injury/illness prevention program for the active individual.
  • Assess the nature of injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by active individuals using relevant theory and practices while in compliance with current standards and established policies.
  • Determine appropriate treatment of the injured active individuals, based on subjective and objective findings from the assessment.
  • Provide appropriate first aid and emergency care for acute musculoskeletal injuries or illnesses in compliance with current professional standards and established policies and procedures in order to minimize disability.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning programs for injuries or physical limitations sustained by the active population to ensure a full return to productivity and an active lifestyle.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and supervise all administrative components of an athletic therapy practice, including finances, therapy room management, personnel and public relations.
  • Provide health care information, education and counseling to active individuals, parents and coaches on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological, and emotional health and wellbeing of the individual.
  • Promote athletic therapy as a professional discipline within the health care system.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, nonverbally and in the written form utilizing appropriate technology.
  • Interact effectively and collaboratively as an integral part of the sports medicine team, respecting the role of all other medical personnel in the management of the injured active population.
  • Conduct professional practice competently in a legal, ethical and moral manner.
  • Employ the principles of research including the collection and analysis of information to form reasoned conclusions.
  • Develop skills to allow further education and personal growth.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY*

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including the following required courses:

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4U)

plus

  • Biology, Grade 12 (U)

plus one of:

  • Physics, Grade 12 (U) or 
  • Chemistry, Grade 12 (U)
  • Mathematics, Grade 12 (U)

plus

  • Three additional Grade 12 credits at the U or M level 
  • Minimum 65% in each course

Or

Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% in each course

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses) and the results of their related work/volunteer experience which includes:

  • Complete 100 hours of volunteer work with an Athletic Therapist or Sports Physiotherapist (SPD)
  • Co-op experience related to Athletic Therapy strongly recommended
  • Attend an information session
  • Hold valid Standard First Aid and CPR- HCP credentials prior to entrance in the program

*At the time of publication the Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences-Athletic Therapy Program was under routine review by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) as part of the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB) process. While it is anticipated that the proposed admission requirements listed above will be approved for the 2013-2014 academic year, it is possible that these may be revised based on MTCU feedback. Criminal Record Check and Immunization Requirements

Sheridan field placement agencies may require a police record check for criminal offences, a vulnerable sector check and/or a current record of immunization. Students will be required to provide this documentation directly to their field placement prior to the start of the placement and at their own expense. Students who cannot meet these requirements may have limited field placement opportunities.  Please refer to the Sheridan Health Services website at immunization.sheridancollege.ca for complete information, or come in to one of the campus health centres.

Sheridan has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this applied degree for a further five-year term starting May 30, 2008.  Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy) Program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame.  An application for renewal of the consent has been submitted and the current consent remains in effect until a decision on the renewal application is made.
