Become a highly skilled make-up artist

A rare program in Ontario, Sheridan’s Makeup for Media and Creative Arts diploma program equips you with both the creative hands-on application techniques and the management, sales and interpersonal skills you need for a career in the cosmetics and beauty-related industries. The program includes two 40-hour field placement assignments based on your specific career interests.

Highly respected professors who remain active in the industry teach you the skills of a professional make-up artist:  

  • Make-up application techniques for film and television, runway, fashion and black and white/colour photography
  • Colour theory and application
  • Skin care and product knowledge
  • Marketing, advertising, business entrepreneurship and sales skills

You learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practical assignments. Classes include:

  • Applying make-up to live models
  • Drawing and rendering theatrical make-up
  • Applying special effects make-up from a specialized kit
  • Presentations by guest speakers from the industry
  • Applying make-up at charity fashion shows, high schools, women’s shelters and senior centres
  • Field trips to businesses employing professionals in the cosmetic industry
  • Two professional photo shoots of your work 

Two Practicums Give Workplace Experience

You'll undertake a 40-hour practicum during each year of your two-year make-up artist program. These practicums are driven by your areas of interest and can range from working in a photographer’s studio or in live theatre to helping with make-up application for television.

The successful completion of this program will enable the graduate to:

  • Assess the chemical composition of cosmetic products and recommend appropriate cosmetic treatments
  • Differentiate ingredients found in cosmetic products and identify their functions and effects
  • Identify and apply various make-up equipment and techniques used for professional application
  • Create a variety of make-up special effects to portray a theme or cater to the requirements of events
  • Apply relevant knowledge of anatomy, physiology, wellness, aging issues and skin disorders to the provision of specialized cosmetic application
  • Compare and contrast sales strategies and promotion techniques used in the cosmetic industry
  • Identify, analyze and apply colour relationships and theories in the application of cosmetics and products for diverse skin types
  • Develop business communication, promotion and marketing tools and materials for specific audiences in the cosmetic and toiletries industry sector
  • Apply business, legal and accounting principles effectively addressing the business needs of an organization
  • Analyze market needs and apply strategic growth principles
  • Identify the principles of organizational behaviour
  • Identify the ecological, ethical and environmental issues of the cosmetic industry
  • Analyze and apply customer relation principles as they relate to sales and marketing
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the ability to manipulate and style hair for a variety of on-set applications
  • Practice nail care techniques in the context of a makeup artistry setting

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)

or

Mature student status. (See "Admissions" section for details.)

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

*Course duration for September starts is two academic years. Course duration for January starts is 16 months continuous.
