The path to success for Shagundeep Singh began with a childhood dream, oceans away from the hallways and classrooms of Sheridan’s Davis Campus where he’s spent the past two years learning.  Shagundeep Singh wearing hospital scrubs

Singh left his home and family in India in 2022, equipped with his dream of studying health sciences, to become an international student at Sheridan. A spring 2023 graduate of the Pre-Health Sciences pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program, he’s now navigating his pre-graduate clinicals for the final part of his Practical Nursing program at Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga Hospital with confidence and competence. The pre-health certificate pathways program set Singh up for a successful transition into the Practical Nursing diploma program. He’ll graduate from the four-semester program in August 2024.

“Choosing Sheridan’s Pre-Health Sciences program as my first postsecondary experience was one of the most strategic decisions in my educational journey. The program offered many distinct advantages that have been instrumental in my academic and professional development.”

His successful year in the pathways program culminated in the honour of being chosen as class valedictorian. His valedictorian speech was full of hope and wisdom. “Live life with no regrets,” he said. “Every experience that comes your way is meant to serve your greater good. Sometimes, life hands you situations that are unexpected. Remain positive and aim to live fully in the present.” Singh also noted that rather than letting obstacles define him, he used them as stepping stones to grow, learn and become stronger.

How did you become interested in health care?

I always wanted to be a nurse because I’ve always felt a strong desire to help others and make a real difference in their lives. I’ve seen how important good care is and how it can positively impact patients and their families. This has inspired me to pursue nursing as a career. Nursing combines science and human connection, which aligns with my values and passions. This combination of care and knowledge makes nursing the perfect path for me.

Why did you choose the Pre-Health Sciences pathway program?

Choosing Sheridan’s Pre-Health Sciences program as my first postsecondary experience was one of the most strategic decisions in my educational journey. The program offered many distinct advantages that have been instrumental in my academic and professional development. The integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application allowed me to develop a solid grasp of the core scientific principles that are now fundamental to my nursing practice.

The program’s emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills has been invaluable. In nursing, quick and accurate decision-making is crucial. The Pre-Health Sciences program encouraged me to analyze information thoroughly, assess situations from multiple perspectives, and make informed decisions swiftly — skills that are directly applicable in a clinical setting.

How did the pathways program support your academic journey?

Starting with a pathways program like Pre-Health Sciences eased my transition into the health-care field. The program was specifically designed to bridge the gap between high school and more specialized postsecondary programs. It helped me adapt to the demands of college-level education, develop effective study habits, and become familiar with the health-care terminology and concepts that are vital in nursing.

The program provided a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental sciences – biology, chemistry and anatomy – which was crucial for my transition into the Practical Nursing diploma program. The early exposure to these essential subjects allowed me to build a strong knowledge base that I continue to rely on in my nursing studies.

One of the unique strengths of Sheridan’s Pre-Health Sciences program is its focus on interprofessional collaboration. Through group projects and interdisciplinary learning experiences, I gained insights into the importance of teamwork and communication in healthcare. These experiences have been directly transferable to my current clinical practice, where effective collaboration with doctors, fellow nurses and other healthcare professionals is vital to providing comprehensive patient care.

What has your experience been like in the nursing program?

I am thoroughly enjoying the nursing program so far. The coursework is challenging but incredibly rewarding, as it provides a deep understanding of the science and practice of nursing. The hands-on clinical experiences have been particularly enlightening, allowing me to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings and develop my skills. The support from instructors and fellow students has been fantastic, creating a collaborative and encouraging learning environment. Overall, my experience has been very positive, and it has strengthened my commitment to becoming a nurse.

“The Pre-Health Sciences program offered a broad overview of various health-related fields, allowing me to explore different areas of interest. This exploration was invaluable in confirming my passion for nursing and solidifying my career goals.”

What insight would you share with other students considering taking a pathways program such as Pre-Health Sciences?

Entering postsecondary education can be daunting, especially when you’re unsure about a specific career path. The Pre-Health Sciences program offered a broad overview of various health-related fields, allowing me to explore different areas of interest. This exploration was invaluable in confirming my passion for nursing and solidifying my career goals. The program provided clarity and direction, ensuring that I was making an informed decision about my future. The faculty and staff were committed to student success, offering guidance, mentorship and resources to help us thrive. Their real-world expertise inspired and motivated me to pursue excellence in my studies and clinical practice.

Unlocking success

Singh has found the pathway to pursuing his dreams at Sheridan. He feels ready to take on the next part of his journey and is determined to unlock success. “Graduation is not the end goal in itself – it is instead a part of the journey of life,” Singh said in his valedictorian speech. “The road ahead might not be easy, and there may be challenges to face, but we will overcome them with our hard work and determination.”
