To mark the start of the Fall 2024 term, Sheridan welcomed thousands of new students over the course of four days in August as part of its New Student Orientation events.

A total of 110 Program Orientation Sessions were hosted virtually, hybrid and in-person at Sheridan’s campuses in Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville. For example, the Magna School of Skilled Trades hosted a welcome event for new students with industry partners, Honours Bachelor of Game Design students enjoyed an extensive virtual orientation and in-person tours of their lab spaces with faculty and Practical Nursing and Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing students received tutorials on how to use key technologies they’ll be exposed to during their studies.

“The First Year Experience team continues to be inspired by the dedication of faculty and staff in making a student’s first experience on campus truly welcoming and memorable,” says Janessa Williamson, First Year Experience Program Coordinator at Sheridan. “From behind-the-scenes work, like preparing and cleaning classroom spaces and hanging signage, to providing direct student support, the success of orientation is due to the contributions of many people across the college.”

Throughout orientation, Bruno’s Lounge — named after Sheridan’s beloved Bruin mascot — was a hub of social activity. The lounge featured activities including friendship-bracelet making and writing a letter to your future self, giving attendees the opportunity to connect with upper-year students and meet their fellow classmates. Students could also explore and learn about nearly 30 SSU clubs.

In collaboration with Sheridan’s Athletics Centre and the SSU, each campus featured a carnival with inflatable activities such as a rock-climbing wall and a large soccer dart board.

Sweet treats including ice cream and cotton candy were also available for students to enjoy.

Sheridan’s First Year Experience team raised over $16,000 in sponsorships from Freedom Mobile, WOW Mobile Boutique, Skip, Bell Canada, RBC and CIBC, with the funds being used to support various orientation activities.
