City of Brampton approves $2.5M for Sheridan’s new Centre for Healthy Communities

To provide better care for people living with chronic diseases and help address Peel Region’s critical need for medical professionals, the City of Brampton has approved $2.5M in funding to support Sheridan College’s new Centre for Healthy Communities.

The new Centre will:

• Train the next generation of nurses and allied health professionals in Brampton to look after the people of Brampton, Peel and Ontario; and support a shared vision for culturally competent care.
• Be a living lab of innovation and partnerships between students, academics, medical professionals, technology innovators, social service providers and residents.
• Help address hallway health care by addressing chronic disease management through interprofessional, preventative care.
• Propel economic growth through an estimated 200-500 new jobs in construction, maintenance, education, health care, administration, industry partnerships and an increased number of students living and attending school in the city.Increase postsecondary options in Brampton by adding graduate certificates in Clinical Kinesiology, Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Research, and, pending provincial approval, Bachelors of Nursing and a degree in Osteopathic Manual Practice.
  
  

This new investment builds on the strong suite of existing health care programs at Sheridan including the highly successful athletic therapy and kinesiology, pharmacy and nursing programs.

“The City of Brampton is dedicated to strengthening our local health care system to one that fosters local talent, creates economic growth and meets the needs of our residents. This commitment to Sheridan College’s new Centre for Healthy Communities will help attract and retain jobs and talent, including an estimated 200 to 500 full-time jobs at the Sheridan campus in Brampton alone,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “Not only will this investment improve the availability of health care for residents, but also strengthen sustainable economic development by delivering on a key foundation of Uptown Brampton redevelopment as a Transit-Oriented Community.”

“We are thrilled to increase postsecondary options in Brampton especially by focusing on the critical needs of the community when it comes to addressing chronic diseases,” said Dr. Janet Morrison, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sheridan. “By providing at least 700 new postsecondary health care seats in Brampton, we’re helping keep local, highly trained health care professionals in Peel Region.”

“Half of Peel residents have at least one diagnosed chronic disease and 73 per cent of Brampton’s population are a visible minority and lack access to culturally competent care. This community needs the Centre for Chronic Disease Management that will be part of this project to address the critical prevention and management needs for people living with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases which push people to emergency rooms,” said Dr. Michael O’Leary, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health & Community Studies.

“Bramptonians deserve world class health care and education right here in our growing city,” said Regional Councillor Martin Medeiros. “This investment in Sheridan College will help deliver on both those priorities: improving access to the quality postsecondary education our employers need talent for, while helping address the health needs of the community.”

The funding complements Sheridan’s $20M investment and will support planning, design, consultation and contract management towards the new building, at the Davis campus in Brampton. Some of the new programming will begin as early as Fall 2022, while the rest will become available pending approvals and development of the new spaces.
