Sheridan has launched a new credential that responds to increased global workforce demand for graduates who are ready to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world.

The Board Undergraduate Certificate (BUC) in Resilience, Ethics and Adaptation adds to Sheridan’s suite of programs, including the Board Undergraduate Certificate in Creativity and Problem Solving, that aim to meet the economy’s need for workers who demonstrate interdisciplinary knowledge in the liberal arts with 21st century skills that foster citizenship, leadership and critical thinking, as well as creativity and innovation. The two BUCs are offered within Sheridan’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHASS). Students do not need to apply for this credential – they can earn it alongside their degree by completing the required electives. A student looks up to her left from her laptop

Research demonstrates that employers identify the skills cultivated in this program as high priority and in-demand. The 2023 Future of Jobs Report lists self-efficacy, interpersonal and creativity skills among the top nine most important core skills required of workers today.

"Sheridan’s new Board Undergraduate Certificate is one-of-a-kind and sets degrees earned at Sheridan apart from those earned anywhere else in the country,” said Genevieve Amaral, Dean of FHASS. “Like our first BUC, this credential highlights Sheridan's commitment to preparing the whole learner for lasting success. It also offers students a way to demonstrate to employers a unique skillset and interdisciplinary understanding of critical human questions and issues that are only becoming more important in the age of AI.”

Student learning will be integrated with co-curricular opportunities, especially those rooted in Sheridan’s S-Sense initiative, which positions students to navigate an unpredictable, possibility-filled world with confidence. Students will also learn to communicate the key career competencies conferred by the credential.

Designed for students already enrolled in a degree program and requiring no additional courses beyond the usual semester load, the BUC offers a unique advantage to being a degree student at Sheridan. The certificate contains a collection of breadth courses that focus on questions of self, identity and relationality across a variety of fields and disciplines. Once completed, students will automatically be granted the credential.

The formal credential is particularly advantageous for students who plan to pursue graduate or post-graduate studies in social work or the cognitive, emotional or relational sciences, social and environmental risk management, security, and design, cultivating a range of competencies that will serve them both personally and professionally.

The certificate covers an assortment of subject areas in the fields of global culture, humanities and social sciences and offers students a choice of six electives from three streams. Electives include principles of psychology, mental health and wellness in practice, life writing, leadership and creative problem-solving, power of voice, and more.
