Sheridan's SIRT recognized for best choreography and special effects in 48 Hour Film Project competition
Sheridan’s Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) recently received the Best Choreography and Best Special Effects awards in the 48 Hour Film Project, a global competition that celebrates creativity in local short films.
The awards recognize A Key to Paradise, a short animated film about two treasure hunters seeking a mysterious treasure with a hidden truth. SIRT’s seven-person crew leveraged in-house virtual production tools such as Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, FAB assets and an Optitrack motion capture system to create the film in just 48 hours.
“SIRT has always been interested in making the impossible possible by developing the most innovative approaches for the creative industries. The 48 Hour Film Project competition was a great opportunity to showcase Sheridan’s creativity in animation filmmaking,” said SIRT Director David Oppenheim. “Speed is always desired in film production, as it includes countless hours of pre- and post-production. With our virtual production set-up at SIRT, we were able to reduce the production time by combining our expertise and cutting-edge tools to develop a dynamic film within a short amount of time.”
The 48 Hour Film Project tasks local filmmakers and creative teams with developing their own short films within a weekend. Participants are provided with a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre – all of which must be included in their film – on Friday evening and must write, shoot, edit and score the movie by Sunday evening.
