Pathways to success

If you know you want to work in health sciences but aren’t sure of your academic path, this program may be ideal for you. There’s a strong focus on academic advising to support your success, and you’ll be introduced to a range of possible career paths in the health sciences field.

Transfer opportunities

When you've completed this program, you can apply to transfer into one of these Sheridan programs: Athletic Therapy, Kinesiology, Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Technician or Animal Care.

Articulation agreements

We've established articulation agreements with other Sheridan applied health programs, as well as with programs at Queen's University and York University. This means that, even if you don't meet the admission requirements for the programs listed in the agreements, you can become eligible by completing Sheridan's Pre-Health Sciences certificate program and meeting certain criteria.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility

Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)
  • Mathematics, Grade 11 (C, M or U)*

*Recommended: Grade 12 Mathematics (C, M or U)

or

Mature student status.

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program may be advised individually regarding other related programs.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Sheridan’s English proficiency requirements.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the program, graduates will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

    • Examine biological concepts, processes and systems of the human body, including genetics and epigenetics, as well as the structure, function and properties of the molecules of life, cells, tissues and organ systems in relation to homeostasis, physical development and health.
    • Examine concepts, processes and systems of chemistry, including atomic and molecular structure; quantities in chemical reactions; solutions and solubility; acids and bases; as well as organic chemistry and biochemistry in relation to health and the human body.
    • Solve numeric problems and interpret data related to health sciences and other science-related fields using mathematical concepts, including algebra and probability, along with descriptive and inferential statistics.
    • Use health sciences and other science-related language and terminology appropriately to communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in written, spoken and visual forms.
    • Prepare a personal strategy and plan for academic, career and professional development in the health sciences or other science-related fields.
    • Investigate health sciences and science-related questions, problems and evidence using the scientific method.
    • Examine fundamental physics laws and concepts and their application to health sciences and other science-related fields.

    Articulation Agreements

    Articulation agreements for programs within Sheridan

    The following Articulation Agreement applies only to students enrolled in the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program, starting at Sheridan in September 2019 or later:

    Applicants who do not possess the necessary admission requirements for applied health programs (Athletic Therapy, Kinesiology, Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technician or Veterinary Technician) at Sheridan who complete the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program will be granted admission, contingent on space in the program (in the semester that they are applying for), if they fulfill the following criteria:

    • Successful completion of the 2 semesters of the Pre-Health program;
    • An overall GPA of 3.0;
    • Minimum grades for the programs specified below

    Program-specific requirements:

    Athletic Therapy; Kinesiology | 4-year degrees

    Minimum 70% in the following courses:

    • BIOL 14108: Human Biology
    • SCIE 22273: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Semester 2
    • CHEM 17370: Introductory Chemistry 1
    • CHEM 29402: Introductory Chemistry 2, Semester 2
    • MATH 10172: Essential Mathematics for the Health Sciences

    Minimum 60% in the following courses:

    • MATH 20025: Functions and Statistics for Health Sciences, Semester 2
    • PHYS 20009: Applied Physics, Semester 2
    • ENGL 10102: Principles of Academic Writing and Research
    • ENGL 17889: Composition and Rhetoric, Semester 2

    Veterinary Technician | 2-year diploma

    Minimum 70% in the following courses:

    • BIOL 14108: Human Biology

    • CHEM 17370: Introductory Chemistry 1
    • CHEM 29402: Introductory Chemistry 2, Semester 2

    For the courses with minimum grade thresholds, as specified above, students may only have a maximum of three graded attempts. Withdrawals without Academic Penalty (i.e., "W" grades) are not included. 

    Articulation agreements with Queen's and York University

    Upon successful completion of the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program, students may also use one of Sheridan's external articulation agreements with Queen's or York University:

    Queen's University

    Bachelor of Health Sciences

    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (75%) (based on Queen's GPA scale) in all courses taken.
      • 63% or higher on the first attempt.
    • No high school prerequisites required.
    • Eligible applicants must have started Sheridan's Pre-Health program in September 2016 or later.

    York University

    • Cumulative program GPA of 3.0 (70%).
    • Into one of the following degree programs (provided students meet the terms of admission into each individual program:
      • Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Global Health or Psychology;
      • Bachelor of Health Studies; or
      • BA in Kinesiology, Global Health or Psychology.
