El Sayed Mahmoud
Biography
El Sayed Mahmoud is a Professor, Principal Investigator and Program Coordinator of Computer Science at Sheridan. El Sayed has moved from a Computer Engineering graduate to fifteen years of professional experience in Applied Computer Science, focusing on Software Engineering, Teaching and Leadership. Then, he earned another fifteen years of academic experience in the same field, focusing on researching AI and employing cutting-edge techniques to develop innovative solutions for healthcare and related challenges, Teaching, Curriculum Development, and Program Coordination. These thirty years of combined professional and academic experiences enabled El Sayed to hone his skills and knowledge in various domains, which in turn allowed him to pioneer Computer Science research for mhealth and to cultivate a vast network of professionals in the computing industry and academia across North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
As an active principal Investigator at the Centre for Applied AI (formerly known as the Centre for Mobile Innovation), El Sayed leads an AI research group. El Sayed established relationships with industrial partners to research and develop solutions for mobile health and caregiver professional training. A testament to his research acumen, El Sayed has authored ten winning research grant applications in the areas of Natural Language Processing and machine learning, securing funding for impactful projects. He has also provided guidance and mentorship to over 51 students, overseeing their successful completion of funded AI research projects, theses, and capstone initiatives. Moreover, his expertise has been disseminated by publishing more than 10 peer-reviewed papers showcasing his contributions to the scientific community. El Sayed reviewed many NSERC grants and peer-reviewed papers. El Sayed's exceptional achievements have garnered recognition and accolades. He was nominated for the Sheridan Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Award in 2018 and 2019. In addition, his remarkable leadership qualities led to a nomination for the Emerging Leader Award in 2022, further validating his impactful contributions to the field.
With a Ph.D. in Computer Science earned in 2013, El Sayed assumed his current position as a professor at Sheridan. In 2015, he joined the team to craft the present-day Sheridan computer science degree that scaffolds research and professional skills for various computing specializations. Three years later, he assumed the program coordinator role and successfully launched the program in 2021.
